Meet the Halubje bell ringers

The Halubje bell ringers are guardians of Halubje’s age-old tradition. They are known for their scarry masks, sheepskin costumes, and the ringing of bells that reverberate through carnival processions. Their mission? To chase away winter and evil forces – with plenty of noise, dance, and passion! This living tradition has been recognized and protected by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The bell ringers are active during the carnival season (January – February), when they visit villages across Kastavština and Halubje, cherishing old customs and bringing the community together. Today, the Association gathers more than 300 adult members and 170 children, known as the “Mići Zvončari” (Little Bell Ringers), who proudly continue this unique tradition.
